The International Standardisation Roadmap for Nanomedicine: feedback from LNE workshop

On November 13, 2023, the nanomedicine community witnessed a landmark event with the “International Standardisation Roadmap for Nanomedicine” workshop. Co-sponsored by METRINO and NanoMeasureFrance, and hosted by the Project coordinator LNE, this workshop served as a crucial platform for advancing nanomedicine metrology.

Event Highlights:

  • Collaborative Platform: Featuring key players in nanomedicine characterisation and standardisation, including JRC, NPL, LNE, NIST, NRC Canada, and SINTEF Industry, alongside EDQM, CEN, ISO, ASTM, and VAMAS.
  • Industry and Innovation Focus: Representatives from the European Commission’s PHOENIX and SAFE-n-MEDTECH OITBs shared insights on supporting nanotechnology-based health products.
  • Robust Participation: Over 74 participants, predominantly from the health sector and service providers, engaged in in-depth discussions on metrology and standardisation in nanomedicine.

Key Takeaways:

  1. Priority on Standard Test Methods: Emphasis on developing standard test methods and Reference Materials (RMs) for nanomedicines, a key priority for the European Commission and various stakeholders.
  2. Addressing Standardisation Complexity: Recognising the fragmented landscape of international standardisation bodies and the need for a unified approach.
  3. European Group on Nanomedicine Standardisation: Proposing the creation of a dedicated Working Group under CEN/TC 352 to consolidate efforts and develop a nanomedicine standardisation roadmap.
  4. Enhancing Collaboration: Strengthening ties between standardisation committees and organisations like ICH and EDQM, with METRINO and the newly formed CCQM Task Group on Particle Metrology spearheading networking actions.
