Practical approach and insights on effective characterisation

After the success of the first METRINO Academy session, we are delighted to announce that registration is open for METRINO Academy Session #2, on how to choose the right measurement method in nanomedicine, on Thursday 5 February 2026, 3 pm CET.

Dr Christian Gollwitzer, from Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt, and Dr Yuri Antonio Diaz Fernandez, from the University of Pavia, will introduce a practical approach, developed within the METRINO project, that participants can use to better characterise their nanomedicine products. Based on real interlaboratory experience, this talk will provide guidance on how to match analytical methods to the right measurand and use case, across research, industry and regulatory contexts.

Full description of this webinar

Characterising nanomedicines presents significant metrological challenges due to the diversity of materials, complex formulations and particle heterogeneity. Limited harmonisation of sample preparation practices and the lack of suitable reference materials further restrict the comparability of measurements across laboratories and analytical techniques.

In the METRINO Academy session #2, the speakers will illustrate these challenges using concrete examples drawn from three years of work within the METRINO project. The session will focus on how measurement choices influence data quality, comparability and interpretation, and why clarity on the target measurand and intended use of the data is essential.

This webinar will share practical lessons learned from interlaboratory studies, highlighting how different analytical methods can be combined and interpreted to answer specific scientific, technological and regulatory questions in nanomedicine.

Speakers

  • Dr Christian Gollwitzer
Head of Working Group X Ray Radiometry (Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt)
  • Dr Yuri Antonio Diaz Fernandez
Professor of Microspectroscopy and Bioimaging (University of Pavia)

Session focus

Choosing the right analytical method is critical for generating meaningful and comparable nanomedicine data. During this session, we will discuss:

  • How different analytical techniques provide different types of information
  • Common challenges related to comparability, traceability and measurement uncertainty
  • Key lessons learned from METRINO interlaboratory activities
  • Practical considerations when characterising
    • Particle size and number concentration
    • Chemical composition and homogeneity
    • Structural integrity

Why attend

  1. Gain a clearer understanding of how analytical method choice affects nanomedicine data
  2. Learn how traceability and comparability issues arise in practice across laboratories and instruments
  3. Understand common pitfalls in nanomedicine characterisation and how to interpret measurements more critically
  4. Engage with experts through interactive live polls and Q&A

Who is this for

Open to both experts and non experts working in nanomedicine, analytical characterisation, metrology, quality control, method development or regulatory science, from academia, industry, metrology institutes or standardisation bodies.

Format

1:15 hour live session including a focused technical presentation and interactive Q&A.
Cameras welcome. Microphones muted by default.
