METRINO beyond the project: a legacy built to be used

The project has closed. Its results are ready to be used.
After 36 months of collaborative measurement science, METRINO has moved from project delivery to legacy. Its methods, evidence, protocols, learning resources and scientific journey are now connected in one public knowledge space—designed to be explored, understood and reused.

01 · The turning point
Turin was not just the final meeting
At a final consortium meeting, it is easy to look backwards. In Turin, METRINO also looked forward.
On 11 and 12 May 2026, partners and invited experts met at INRiM to examine what the project had produced, what remained difficult, and what would make its results genuinely useful beyond the funded period. The conversation moved from standardisation expectations to a structured collective reflection on future use, unmet needs and continuity.

An external standardisation perspective
37 participants joined a hybrid session with Charles Clifford, Chair of ISO/TC 229, on what standards communities need from method developers and how future uptake can be prepared responsibly.
12 May 2026
A collective legacy exercise
41 participants contributed 197 entries through a hybrid Rose–Bud–Thorn exercise, then prioritised future needs and possible continuation routes.
Seven recurring themes emerged. Among them were the need for clearer SOPs, credible reference and quality-control materials, better data-treatment guidance, earlier mapping of standardisation pathways, and a community able to continue the conversation after the grant.
This reflection helped sharpen a simple priority: METRINO’s closing package could not be only a set of formal reports. Visitors needed clear routes from a practical question to an explanation, then to the authoritative evidence and reusable resource.

The redesigned results ecosystem does not ask visitors to understand the project structure first. Choose a practical route and move from accessible context to the underlying publication, dataset, deliverable, SOP or replay.

03 · One connected project
From candidate materials to community uptake
METRINO’s six work packages form one measurement and impact chain. Each page now explains what was produced, what the evidence means, where its limits lie and how to continue to the underlying resources.
WP1
Reference material candidates
Candidate iron oxide and upconversion nanoparticles, homogeneity and stability evidence, and a roadmap towards future reference and quality-control materials.
WP2
Advanced characterisation
Traceable physical and chemical measurement approaches, decision tables, tested SOPs and multimodal strategies for complex nanomedicines.
WP3
Preparation & fractionation
Sample preparation, AF4, SEC and SAXS workflows showing why matrix effects, recovery, data treatment and reporting belong to the measurement itself.
WP4
Correlative tissue evidence
Protocols, tissue phantoms, cell and tissue models, multimodal imaging and interlaboratory evidence for locating and quantifying nanoparticles.
WP5
Creating impact
Stakeholder dialogue, training, standardisation awareness, dissemination, exploitation pathways and the public resources that support future uptake.
WP6
Management & coordination
The governance, Project Board, consortium meetings and coordination framework that kept five result-producing work packages aligned across 36 months.
04 · Beyond technical delivery
A project built to travel
METRINO combined technical delivery with sustained dialogue across scientific, industrial, educational, regulatory and standardisation communities.

Figures are drawn from the project’s final second-period Outcomes and Impact Report. They describe documented activities and relationships; formal adoption of standards or regulation follows independent consensus and decision-making processes.
